Putting Summer Away

I finished cutting the last of my sweetgrass last night. Each year this becomes a larger task, I just don't have the heart to keep my two beds in check. It may also be that cutting and sorting this wonderful fiber is relaxing, I enjoy those times in the garden. The weather is not too hot, but the sun is shining. The smell of the cut grass is so pleasant and I can look forward to Fall and Winter weaving and coiling. I guess in short the work is done and enjoyment is ahead.
There is much to do yet in the garden, which for me is salad fixings and weaving materials. Many more beds to cut and put away, but the one I cherish the most is complete.

  1. Thanks for your recent comments! I am indeed lucky to live where I do, but some of my groups are nationwide, like the Photo Art Journal Yahoo group. It is very inspiring to be surrounded with creative people!

What variety of sweetgrass are you growing, and how are they planted? That is something I would like to get started, if only for the lovely scents!

  2. heirochloe odorata, it is very fragarant and grows well. I get 2 nice cuttings almost every year.
I have some in a pot, but it does not do as well as that that I have in the garden. It spreads like crab grass. Mine is planted where it receives about 6 hours of sun per day, I water it twice per week, the soil is slightly clay base. I do ammend with compost and composted horse manure once each year. It roughly follows the farmers haying schedule.
I have been to the Whidbey Island area years ago, it was beautiful. I would bet it would grow there nicely.
